digitized painting of 2002

The template you see here is a "paint by numbers" that I created from a digital photo. In deconstructing the image, I was able to index a specified number of colors. Each color was given a number and painting began. At the time these painting were being produced, I was married and working in commercial print produciton. Lifestyle factors influenced the rigid and technical approach I made to painting.

Although these were highly technical pieces, they were also color studies. When I first started painting, I wanted to paint large simple color squares to gain insight to color theory. The large squares became hundreds of small squares and the relationships became much more complex than I had imagined. I began to feel that I had come across my own take on color theory where each colored square would represent a real life element.
In the third picture, you see two of my paintings in the ground level of the MCA in Chicago. This was during Version 02. The themes I chose to paint were alway landscapes. In the two paintings below, I chose to poplulate my forested landscapes with logging equipment. It became clear to see the relationship of green to vegetation and growth and the relationhip of orange and yellow to death and destruction. Unfortunatley, the group that had invited me to attend the the Version 02 event was subsequently banned from the museum due to a messy performance that interfered with union paid janitors. Overall, it was a positive experience.
